From the series Matisse and I

And the palm a broad basin where ancient rivers have carved

crossings, water routes, passage for journeys, passage back home

                                                      from Latitude and Longitude

Inside the prayer, only the prayer

In her breath and her thoughts

Her fear is the prayer

              from Prayer for the Prayer

Oh Grief! Your roots and tendrils have woven this woman

into herself, a seed long ago broken open

Earth now, not green, her body

becoming a boulder, slow erosion

from Abandoned Boat, He Said, Swamped in Moonlight
